Final Blog Post

As I reflect on my blog I am amazed of what I actually accomplished. Never did I imagine I would be able to create, publish, and teach using technology and web 2.0 tools. Frankly until this course, I had never heard of a Web 2.0 tool. My absolute favorite assignment was digital storytelling. I am SO proud of my creation. It was one of the more difficult and time consuming assignments for me but the most rewarding. My least favorite assignment was group and personal wiki. I didn't really get anything out of it. I understand it's purpose and function but found it to be of little to no use to me during this course. I did the assignments for the sake of doing them. Throughout the course I thoroughly enjoyed the blogging process. I felt like my blog entries was my class participation. I only visited 7 other classmates blogs and left comments. It would have been nice to alternate from week to week, writing our own blog entry and visiting classmates blogs. I mostly gave feedback or praise and encouragement in response to classmates blogs.

ICP Selection

For the ICP project I selected LinkedIn, Ning, and TappedIn. These are all Web 2.0 tools used for social networking. Social network Web 2.0 tools allow users to develop relationships between teachers, educators, administrators, professional individuals, groups, organizations, web sites, and other information/knowledge processing entities. Online communities engage in discussions, host classes, recommend web sites, offer professional opportunities, allow for interaction through discussion boards, and offer participants access a wide array of informational resources. These communities encompass individuals with diverse interests, skills, and backgrounds, which can meet and learn from one another in a productive professional environment. Web 2.0 tools used for social networking offer limitless possibilities.

HOT OFF THE PRESS, READ ALL ABOUT IT...

Communication between parents and teachers is essential for student success. When I become an educator I hope to establish partnerships with parents to allow the door for communication to ALWAYS be open. Parents need to know and feel that teachers are approachable. Often it is difficult for parents to frequent parent teacher conferences, open house, board meetings, and activities or programs taking place within their child's school. Parent's busy schedules often don't allow flexibility to accommodate such activities. Luckily parents and teachers can communicate in a variety of ways. In my opinion one of the very best ways to effectively communicate is via email. It is a fast and efficient way to ask questions, get answers, share information, and maintain a relationship/partnership. I know that I will use email as the main form of communication with parents. I believe podcast would be fun to use to share information with parents. I could create one podcast for ALL parents. For this weeks assignment we created a newsletter. I think it would be interesting to turn it into a podcast. For the newsletter I used Microsoft Publisher. I had difficulty choosing which template to use for the layout. I also had to figure out how to make the print/text larger without changing the font.. So, now I know how to use the zoom option. Two years ago I took a course at the Mount, Nature of Schools. I had to write a letter to parents explaining how I was going to incorporate multicultural influence into the curriculum. I used the letter for this assignment. I wish I had know about Microsoft publisher then. I'm not sure that I would do anything differently if I were to compose another newsletter.

I really enjoyed this weeks assignments. I found them to be relatively easy and time efficient. As we learned through the readings and resources external rewards, such as grades, can provide a strong incentive for students to perform work and can affect student learning. For the assessment and evaluation process I choose engrade to create my grade book. An attractive feature of online grade books is that they can't get lost or stolen. You can save on CD or flash drive, email grades to other educators on your team, guidance counselors, administration, and provide students and parents with information more quickly, and readily and aid in organization. This program was real easy to use and gave clear step-by-step instructions with a great demo video. Once I do become an educator I hope the district I am employed by uses such programs as engrade.

DIGITAL STORYTELLING

Digital storytelling is basically using computer tools to tell a story. My father was the topic for my digital story. In June 2007 he was diagnosed with lung cancer. He passed away on November 10, 2007. This assignment was very personal. After reading the directions I decided to contact Dr.Smirnova and ask for creative liberty. It was granted and I began immediately. I asked my older sister to help with this assignment, I thought it was important to include her. Before deciding what program to use I began the process by choosing the photographs. Between the two of us we had so many, having a hard time narrowing it down . We wanted to depict a condensed version of his life. The next step was choosing a song. "American Pie" seemed like the logical decision. The song is clearly relating a defining moment in the American experience, something had been lost, and we knew it. We live it. A digital story is expected to evoke emotion. The greatest challenge was trying to sequence the photos to go along with the lyrics and his actual life. The pictures and song tell the story.

Digital Storytelling

Puzzle Time

For Assignment 4A, the construction of a cross word puzzle was required using two different programs. Excel was one of the programs used to teach content related vocabulary words. I visited the various tutorials offered and carefully read the directions. It is true, Excel is like playing battleship. Before I began constructing the puzzle in Excel I decided to visit the other program EdHelper, puzzle maker. I didn't plan on creating the puzzle at that time until I realized how simple it was. I see why teachers would like this program. It offers ease and speed to create a puzzle. It literally took a fraction of the time to create as it did in Excel. I believe this project would help students learn to use Excel and afford them the opportunity to learn vocabulary at the same time. I never used Excel before and am not sure if I will. If I do, at least I'll know the basics. Now that computers are available in MOST classrooms, it is unnecessary for students to frequent computer labs to learn how to use particular programs. It can be done from within the classroom and this assignment is a great way to try it out.
Why not?
I decided to put my puzzle on my web page. Try it out!

Instructional Design & Constructvisim

" As long as there were people asking each other questions, we have had constructivist classrooms. Constructivism, the study of learning, is about how we all make sense of our world, and that really hasn't changed. "

Instructional System Design Models aid instructors by offering structure for planning and teaching. They help the teacher identify the content they will teach, but also the teaching, and learning strategies they plan to use, resources, and how to execute lessons.
For the Behavior Model, direct instruction tools that take a learner from knowledge acquisition to fluency and maintenance make the best sense to use.
For the Information Processing Model, tools will help with the clear understanding of the concepts.
The Personal Model emphasizes development of the individual learner's self concept.
Instructional Design Knowledge Base
Front End Analysis

Outcomes and Objectives
Analyze learning outcomes and performance objectives by identifying the domains and levels of learning and determining prerequisite skills and tasks/content and structure.
Models/Theories
Strategies and tactics support instructional models with instructional strategies and tactics.
Behaviorism
Cognitivism
Constructivism
Identify media to deliver the instructional program.
Evaluation occurs during the developmental stage of the instructional design process. Evaluate during process to determine where to find weakness in instruction and revisions can be made.

For the WebQuest assignment we looked into constructivism. Constructivism stimulates and engages students. Students who have the opportunity to be in a constructivist classroom learn to question things and apply their curiosity. It also enables students to take ownership of what they learn, since learning is based on students’ questions and explorations. Constructivism aids students social and communication skills by creating a classroom environment that concentrates on collaboration and the exchange of ideas. Students learn how to articulate their ideas clearly as well as to collaborate on tasks by sharing in group projects. Students will exchange ideas and must learn to "negotiate" with others and to evaluate their contributions in a socially acceptable manner. This is essential to success in the real world. Students will be exposed to a variety of experiences where they will have to cooperate and navigate among the ideas of others.

PPT and Podcast Reflection

Here is the link to my podcast if anyone is interested in listening to it. http://barbisfeedback.mypodcast.com/2008/10/TWT_Reflection-149432.html
At first I wasn't going to do the HA3 assignment. I felt that I needed a break from the computer for a few days. As you see in the prior post I had major PPT drama. Needless to say, I ended up doing the podcast a few days later. I didn't do it for the extra credit, I did it because I wanted to know how. I felt that I'd be losing out if I didn't. It took me about 25-30 min to complete. I am proud of the finished product and am impressed with the quality of sound. I'm surprised that it really wasn't difficult to do.

PPT what an easy program to use. Duh!

This power point assignment should have been so easy, but for me It wasn't. This is because I have little confidence and experience with the programs that are already installed in my computer. Until now, I didn't even know what programs I have. Read the following messages then the explination that follows.

Barbi Neumann-Marty [09:40 PM]: I downloaded audacity and recorded my voice. I saved it as a audio file. On 280 slides program I cannot figure how to import the audio. When I go to import, and clicked on the file I get a message saying, we only support files with the PPTX, PPT, or ODP extension. Any suggestions?

Ludmila Smirnova [10:55 PM]: Barbi,It means you need to create a PPT slide and add recording there as I recommended to begin with.It is a learning experience. I am proud of you for handling Audacity. Use that recoding in your blog!Keep me posted.DrS

Barbi Neumann-Marty [11:12 PM]: I am unable to do this assignment as you suggested. I submitted the two audio recordings I created using Audacity and put my PPT in the notes section. I've been working on this for 3 days. I know when enough is enough, and it's enough. There is a limit to learning. I cannot learn when I cannot figure out what EXACTLY to do. Slides 280 shouldn't be recommend as a tool because it is to difficult for beginners. You should consider tools for different levels of technology abilities. This should have been an easy assignment for ALL. Rather than offering four tools you should provide one. I spent one day just looking at them all and tryiing to figure out which to use. It took me about 27-30 hours to complete a what should have been easy assignment incorrectly. What advice or suggestions can you provide me to help me get through the next few weeks. It's to late to attempt HA3, I will try to accomplish it before tomorrows class. Thank you for your help anyway. I do appreciate that you take time to assit me whenever I call on you. It's not your fault I don't get it. I hope you know I really do try. I don't have anyone to help me and am doing the best I possibly can. Please be patient I know I can do it, I just need more time. Well, I don't know if it's time or what, I just need it.Thank you again, I do appreciate it.Barbi

Ludmila Smirnova [11:14 AM]: Barbi, here is one of the best PPT tutorial sites: http://www.internet4classrooms.com/template_ppxp.htm -- it has an icon that represents the PPT program. DrS

Barbi Neumann-Marty [02:43 PM]: I did find the PPT program on my computer. I explored it a little and it seems VERY easy. I will go to the tutorial you suggested before I redo the assignment. Thank you once again. I can't believe I put myself through slides 280 DRAMA. Next time I'm unsure I'll ask.Barbi

I didn't understand the directions to the assignment. I thought I was supposed to choose one of the tool offered to create the PPT with audio. I choose 280 slides and created the PPT. I spent a few hours trying to figure how to record the audio component of the assignment. Finally I contacted Dr.S and told her of my troubles. She recommended www.audicty.com I went there and was easily able to record the audio. Needless to say, I couldn't import the audio to the PPT. I tried for a few hours and gave up. You can't even imagine how frustrated I was. At times, I was crying for fear of failure. I decided to submit the PPT anyway, I put to much time into it and could spend another moment on it. Within a day with help from Dr.S, I figured out that I have a PPT already installed in my computer and I was to use it. I decided to redo the assignment correctly and found it to be so EASY.... The audio recording was so simple. I can't tell you how angry I am with myself for doing all that work. I can honestly say that I'm glad that this happened to me because it made me push myself further than I ever thought possible. I learned if in the future I'm unsure to just ask. I have nothing to lose but my mind........

Why do we have to work in groups?

Working in a group stresses me out. Whenever I find out that that group collaboration is part of the course I get kinda nervous. I'm not comfortable with other individuals being responsible for a portion of my grade. I feel that group work can be harder for the teacher to monitor and can lead to domination by a few. I will admit that I am a weak link in my group as far as technological abilities but I am willing to learn and do whatever it takes. I don't feel comfortable being responsible for other individuals grades based on my technology level. I think that at the graduate level students should be responsible for their grade and their grade alone. I feel that no one other than myself has right to my grades. Tuition is enormous, I just don't feel comfortable for others being responsible for my grade and again I don't feel comfortable being responsible for others.

Queen of Sheba

I can't believe how easy this week’s assignment was. Don't let me fool you; it took me a great deal of time to install Inspiration. First I downloaded Inspire Data and couldn't figure out what to do. It didn't coincide with the assignment. I was going back and forth trying to sort things out. It was getting late so I decided to stop and resume in the morning. The next morning I put Dianna on the bus, gave baby Sofia her breakfast, and began once again. I went back to the directions, A2 MM. I read them again, went through the tutorial, and tried Inspire Data one last time. I knew I did something wrong and just had to slow down and sort it all out. I went back to the directions, and downloaded Inspiration one more time. During that process I realized I uploaded the wrong program. I couldn't believe it. I wasted over three hours in the wrong program. Once downloaded, I was easily able to complete the assignment. Did I ever feel like the Queen of Sheba. That feeling was short lived once I realized I had to save the assignment into JPeg. What the heck is that, I had no clue. I decided to call my sister because I didn't want to waist anymore time. She was able to talk me through the steps with no problem. I submitted the assignment and am ready to start working on the HA assignment.

Frustration, Frustration, Frustration....

I found this assignment to be very time consuming and frustrating. I had a hard time finding sites relevant to my content area (Special Education) to met the five w’s Kathy Schrock suggests. Two obstacles I encountered were finding an actual author and if they were an expert in this field and who sponsored the page. After viewing many articles I figured it out. I suggest that this assignment have video tutorials. Why does this assignment have so many components? Put favorite links page on PWS, web reflection in our blog, and the three evaluations. With the group work, individual assignments, registering and exploring new sites, reading articles and watching videos I was overwhelmed this week.

A moment like this.

I am so frustrated with Wiki. I just don't get it! I understand it's a way to communicate without using email. I'm supposed to edit and save. I also understand that a individual or group of individuals can edit and save on the wiki. I started one on pbwiki but am unsure of what to do next.http://barbi-newadventure.blogspot.com/I am going to go back and revisit the wiki info and tutorials. I hope I gain insight and direction as what to do.

Dear Blog

Wow, what a week. I can't believe what I've accomplished. My favorite assignment was the PWS. I know I'm in the beginning stages but I have ideas of things I want to learn how to do to make the page more unique. It finally dawned on me that blogging is kinda like writing in a diary. The only difference is people get to read it and comment back. I also have a blog on my PWS. I'm not sure that I need both. Do I? Saving into PDF drove me crazy for nearly an hour. I watched the screencast I can't tell you how many times and still couldn't figure it out. Finally, I reached out to a classmate, she informed me to go to Google and type in cute PDF. Funny thing is once she said it I remember Dr. Smirnova telling us to do that very same thing. Duh..... Once downloaded, I saved my file to PDF with no problem. I then submitted my TP. It worked and I was so excited! I then went to submit my TI and couldn't. I contacted Dr.S and she told me I was to submit all three at the same time. The directions weren't clear to me. I thought we were to submit three files one at a time. I wonder if I was the only one who did this? This was a blow to me, I thought I had a handle on things. I know one thing, I wont be doing that again. If the directions aren't clear, I will ask for help. The next thing I want to figure out how to do is to put all the links to the assignments I'm working on in one place. I think it would make it easier to find my projects. Not only for myself, but to make it easier for others to view. I'm nervous and excited for our first class meeting. I don't have a web-cam or an ear piece. Do we absolutely need it? I think I'm going inquire within a forum to see what the general consensus is.

New Adventure

New Experience

Wow, I can't believe how much exploring I've been doing. I think I'm going to like blogging. This is my first blog ever. I have to figure out how to find or look at others blogs. I wonder how my classmates or group members will find my blog.
