DIGITAL STORYTELLING

Digital storytelling is basically using computer tools to tell a story. My father was the topic for my digital story. In June 2007 he was diagnosed with lung cancer. He passed away on November 10, 2007. This assignment was very personal. After reading the directions I decided to contact Dr.Smirnova and ask for creative liberty. It was granted and I began immediately. I asked my older sister to help with this assignment, I thought it was important to include her. Before deciding what program to use I began the process by choosing the photographs. Between the two of us we had so many, having a hard time narrowing it down . We wanted to depict a condensed version of his life. The next step was choosing a song. "American Pie" seemed like the logical decision. The song is clearly relating a defining moment in the American experience, something had been lost, and we knew it. We live it. A digital story is expected to evoke emotion. The greatest challenge was trying to sequence the photos to go along with the lyrics and his actual life. The pictures and song tell the story.

Barbi,
This did bring a tears to my eye. This past summer, month after my daughter was born, my father passed away unexpectedly. The funeral home,we have used, also used digital stories in showing pictures from the past about my father (similar to yours) during the wake. It brought some tears and laughter. It was very heartwarming to know that our fathers have left great memories for us. You did a great job!!!
